View from the Hohensalzburg fortress across the old town with the cathedral and the Kollegienkirche

Salzburg City

Salzburg's Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site: baroque facades, the Hohensalzburg Fortress towering above the rooftops, and narrow lanes where Mozart's birthplace and countless small shops sit only steps apart. A walk through Getreidegasse, a view from the fortress over the city, and a stroll along the Salzach river are must-dos for most visitors.

The centre of Hallstatt with its church spire and wooden balcony houses on the steep lakeshore

Hallstatt

Built between a steep rock face and a deep green lake, Hallstatt is considered one of the most beautiful villages in the Salzkammergut. The picturesque setting, with its parish church right on the shore, narrow lanes and mountains in the background, makes this small village a popular destination for a relaxed day trip.

The fjord-like Königssee between steep cliffs, with the east face of the Watzmann

Königssee

Königssee, just across the border in the Berchtesgaden region, is often called Germany's most beautiful lake. Surrounded by steep cliffs, its emerald-green water lies almost untouched, and silent electric boats carry visitors to the pilgrimage church of St. Bartholomä beneath the mighty Watzmann.

A rowing boat on the mirror-smooth Wolfgangsee, the mountains reflected in the water

Wolfgangsee

Wolfgangsee is one of the best-known lakes in the Salzkammergut, shaped by the charming village of St. Wolfgang with its pilgrimage church and traditional lakeside inns. The historic Schafberg cog railway climbs from here up to one of the finest panoramas in the region.

The Fuschlsee with Schloss Fuschl, surrounded by forest and the mountains of the Salzkammergut

Fuschlsee

Just a few minutes' drive from Salzburg lies Fuschlsee, with its strikingly clear, turquoise-green water. Gentle hills and forests frame the lake, which is perfect for a short walk or a rest by the shore.

The rooftops of Berchtesgaden below the twin peaks of the Watzmann in evening light

Berchtesgaden

Berchtesgaden lies just a short drive across the border from Salzburg, surrounded by one of the most impressive mountain landscapes in the Alps. The historic market square with its colourful facades and the view of the Watzmann make it a rewarding destination for a side trip.

The lakeside promenade of Zell am See below the snow-covered peaks of the Hohe Tauern

Zell am See

Zell am See sits nestled between the lake of the same name and the rugged peaks of the Hohe Tauern. The town is a popular starting point for hikes, cable car rides and a relaxed day by the water with views of the surrounding Alps.
