Good to know about Mauterndorf

Mauterndorf is a historic market town in the Lungau, its stepped-gable houses gathered around the mighty Mauterndorf Castle. The Grosseckbahn, an eight-seater gondola, runs from the village up into the Grosseck-Speiereck ski area, which Mauterndorf shares with St. Michael.

The Lungau lies south of the Tauern range, and from Salzburg you reach it through the Tauern tunnel or over the Radstädter Tauern pass. Its four ski areas — Katschberg, Grosseck-Speiereck, Fanningberg and Obertauern — add up to more than 300 km of pistes.

Getting there: Here the shorter way is not the Tauern tunnel but the Radstädter Tauern pass: we leave the motorway at Altenmarkt and drive via Radstadt up to Obertauern and down the other side into the Lungau. Both routes take about the same time; if there is snow on the pass your driver can take the tunnel instead, and the fixed price stays the same.

Is Mauterndorf worth a day off skiing?

Yes, mainly for the castle: it dates from the 13th century, was the summer residence of Salzburg’s prince-archbishops and is open to visitors in winter as well. There are also cross-country trails and winter walks around the village.
