Saalfelden is the town at the foot of the Steinernes Meer, set in the Pinzgau between the Skicircus, the Hochkönig and Zell am See. Cross-country skiers and biathletes have the Nordic Park Saalfelden on their doorstep.

Two main valleys run through the Pinzgau, the western part of the Salzburg region: the Saalach valley with Lofer and Saalfelden, and the upper Salzach valley with Mittersill and Neukirchen am Großvenediger. Besides the Skicircus and Zell am See-Kaprun, the area has ski resorts of its own, such as the Wildkogel-Arena around Neukirchen and Bramberg.

Getting there: The road follows the Saalach valley to Lofer and then the Pinzgau road (B311) to Saalfelden. About a third of the route is in Bavaria, so keep an ID card or passport ready.
